Every lawyer in Australia gets the same LinkedIn message ten times a day: “Hey, I’ve got a great job for you.” We’re not going to do that. We’d rather show you what a normal Tuesday here actually looks like — the people, the work, how we treat each other — and let you decide.
Tech companies, hospitality, trades — they figured out how to attract great people a long time ago. They stopped advertising and started showing what the work is actually like. Law firms are still sending the same boring LinkedIn message at 8am.
So we’re doing it the other way. No corporate fluff. No “fast-paced dynamic environment.” Just the real version — watch the video up top, then decide for yourself.
We’re a specialist litigation firm — commercial disputes for businesses and individuals across Australia: defamation, employment, debt recovery, insolvency, partnership and shareholder disputes, building and construction, property, and estate disputes.
We’re not generalists doing litigation on the side. Every lawyer here is a dispute specialist, and that focus is how we give fast, accurate, commercial advice — without the woolly hedging that gives lawyers a bad name.
Long hours, high stakes, and firm cultures that confuse martyrdom with merit have made law one of the most punishing professions to work in. Most firms admit it. Very few do anything structural about it.
At Twomey, good mental health isn’t a side-benefit of working here — it’s something we actively design for. It shapes how we structure teams, set workloads, manage performance, and run the working day. We can’t promise you’ll never have a hard week — litigation is demanding. What we can promise is that hard weeks are the exception, not the operating model — and that when someone’s struggling, the firm notices.
Every person here has a scheduled Check In with their supervising Partner or a Director, roughly every two months. It isn’t a performance review and it isn’t a tick-box. It’s a structured conversation that exists for one reason: so no one at this firm is invisible.
What a Check In covers
We’re not afraid to be different. Law firms are famously slow to change — we’re not. We throw out the playbook when the playbook is the problem, in how matters are run, how teams are built, how people progress, and how we use technology.
Humble doesn’t mean meek — it means no ego, no chest-beating, no politics. We know the law inside out and use it for our clients, but we don’t act like we’re the heroes of the story. We let the work speak.
In litigation, the other side, the court and the facts can change overnight. We pivot fast and don’t let small hurdles stop us — backed by systems that let lawyers move quickly without burning out or making mistakes.
We could press every point. We won’t, if it doesn’t help the client win. We give advice that’s commercially sharp, not combatively reflexive. The strategy serves the client — not our billable hours.
Our people aren’t showing up burnt out from the day before. The workload is manageable. It’s distributed fairly. And no one’s tiptoeing around anyone.
Every matter runs as a team — a senior lawyer on strategy and supervision, a mid-level lawyer with day-to-day conduct, and a junior doing meaningful groundwork (not just admin). The work is spread evenly, and no one is buried.
We don’t dump a junior with files and tell them to figure it out. Seniors are actively involved — you research, propose and recommend, then you talk it through together. Two heads on the matter. It’s how good lawyers are actually made.
This is the thing people notice most. No internal jockeying, no backchanneling. People genuinely have each other’s back — and that comes from the top. People don’t leave jobs because of the job; they leave because of their supervisor. Ours are the kind you’d actually want to work for.
Our billable targets are set high enough to perform, but genuinely achievable in business hours when you’re working in our system. No heroic late-night grind to make the numbers. New people get a real ramp-up — you’re not expected to be at full KPI while you learn the Twomey way.
We’re not going to list qualifications — you already know if you’ve got those. We’re looking for someone hungry: hungry to develop, hungry for opportunity, hungry to get everything out of their career.
The kind of person who wants to perform at an elite level during business hours, then switch off and live a genuinely good life outside of them. We don’t think those two things are a trade-off. The best lawyers we know want both — and most firms only let them have one.
Traditional firms make you grind through lawyer, associate, senior associate — often years between recognitions. We’ve broken those into sublevels (three for Lawyer, three for Associate, two for Senior Associate, then separate progression above). As your skills develop, we level you up — with the pay increase that comes with it.
And we progress on skill, not years on the desk. Two lawyers admitted the same year might sit at different sublevels, because people develop at different paces. Same level, same pay — but the path there reflects actual skill, not a calendar.
If we’re right for each other, you’ll know quickly. And if we’re not, we’ll tell you. That’s the Twomey way.
Casual dress — suits come out for court and mediation; otherwise, be comfortable.
Flexible hours — do your hours across the week, anywhere in a 7:30am–5:00pm window.
Flexible public holidays — work the day, bank a day in lieu. Minimal Christmas shutdown.
Wellness allowance — plus a free in-office gym at the Gold Coast, on your own schedule.
Quarterly team days — every office gets off the tools to actually bond.
You’ll notice we haven’t actually asked you to apply for anything. That’s on purpose.
The money is roughly the same wherever you work as a lawyer — that’s just the truth of it. So the only thing that’s really different between firms is what your day feels like and how you’re treated. We’re not going to convince you of ours in a job ad. We’d rather you watch how we do things, decide we’re worth it, and come to us. The lawyers who do that are always the right fit anyway.
So no pressure. But when you’re ready, here’s where we are.
No cover-letter theatre. Tell us where you’re at and what you’re after. If we’re a fit, you’ll know quickly — and if we’re not, we’ll tell you.
